The Best Toddler Meals

Toddlers have plenty of energy as tiny human beings. Nutrition is the priority when thinking about the best toddler meals for your child. They’re growing and moving a ton, so easy meals and snacks on the go are ideal for toddlers. Plus, this is also a good time in their development to try plenty of diverse foods. Over time, they’ll start to learn about different flavors and food textures.

Toddlers don’t need to eat too much at one time or within 24 hours. Remember, they don’t weigh much, but they are still growing, so it’s important to pack each meal with nutritious food. We’ve pulled together the best toddler meals at Memories & Milestones Academy so you can make them at home and know what to expect when we’re caring for your toddler.

First, it’s handy to know a typical toddler plate should consist of:

  • half fruits and veggies
  • a quarter of grains
  • a quarter protein
  • One serving of dairy

The Best Toddler Meals – Our Tried and True

Pasta, Peas, Butter, and Parmesan Cheese

Cook pasta according to the box directions, add frozen peas to cook with the pasta for the last 2 minutes, rinse, melt a teaspoon of butter and add a teaspoon of parmesan cheese.

Grilled Cheese

Choose whole wheat bread, and don’t overdo it on the cheese (use one slice of cheese max). Skip the butter if you have a nonstick pan. Serve with fruit and veggies for a complete meal.

Scrambled Eggs

Scramble an egg and serve it with a few berries or apple slices. A side of sweet potato chunks is ideal for making it a complete meal.

Reminder: 6 oz. of milk is ideal at every meal.

Easy Toddler Meals – Fun and Easy to Prepare

Ham & Pineapple Pizza Muffins

Split and toast an English muffin. Spread a tablespoon of pre-made pizza sauce on top. Add a little cut-up sliced ham and pineapple slices. Top everything with 1 TBSP of shredded cheese.

Apple Pancakes

Pancake mix + ½ cup grated (drained) apples + nut butter make a tasty pancake. Add a tsp of cinnamon for flavor if you want to enhance the flavor. Cook as directed on the pancake box.

Whole Grain Cereal and Fruit

Choose a healthy whole grain cereal low in sugar and mix it with fruit. Berries tend to work the best. You can add cereal and fruit to yogurt to make a parfait.

Meals to Make Together Toddler Meals

Bean & Cheese Quesadilla

Spread beans and cheese on one side of a tortilla and place a second tortilla on the top to make a quesadilla. Now be careful around the stove; it’s time for the adult to take over, but show your child how to be safe around the stove and allow them to watch if they want. Place the quesadilla on a warm skillet, flip after two minutes, make sure cheese is melted, remove, cool, cut into quarters and enjoy. Service with fresh salsa and fruit to make it a complete meal.

Mac & Cheese with Broccoli (or Peas)

Cook boxed macaroni and cheese, add frozen broccoli (or peas) with the pasta, and cook using the directions on the box. Add a side of fruit for a complete meal.

Funfetti Energy Balls

These are nutritious, no bake, fun, vegan, gluten-free, and most importantly, fun! Here’s the recipe

The Easiest Meal Ever

Let’s be realistic; sometimes, you don’t want to cook or even attempt a recipe. That’s okay. You have a toddler meal with a handful of carrots*, some berries or a low sugar apple juice, a couple of small slices of cheese, or some yogurt. We don’t recommend it every day, but in a pinch, this is perfect and creates half a plate of fruits and veggies, some protein, and dairy.

*It’s difficult for toddlers to eat raw fresh carrots. Boil carrots for a few minutes, put them back in the fridge to cool, and use them as your would raw fresh carrots until your child gets older.

Toddle Meals On the Go

Sun Butter Sandwich and Fruit

Choose low sugar, all-natural sun butter, and whole grain bread for a healthier sandwich. Slice your fruit or choose a fruit cup.

Banana and Sun Butter Roll Up

Spread sun butter on a whole wheat tortilla, add some mashed bananas and roll it up.

Tip: We use sun butter but at home, you can substitute peanut butter or your favorite nut butter for the sun butter in the recipes above.

Hummus Pita & Veggies

Hummus is easy to make or buy, and it’s an easy-to-spread healthy option on the go. It tastes great with fresh veggies, or if you prefer, it’s also delicious with cut-up pita, naan bread, or pretzels.

Tip: Freeze a water bottle and pack it with your “meal on the go” to keep everything cool.

Meals for the Pickiest of Picky Toddler Eaters

Mini Bagel Pizzas with Pepper “Sprinkles”

Toast a whole grain mini bagel, and add pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle with chopped green peppers and bake for 8 minutes in the oven. Serve with a side of fruit and milk for a complete meal.

Make a healthy version with whole wheat pasta and ground chicken meatballs. Don’t forget to make the meatball a mini meatball for your toddler. Service with fruit and milk for a complete meal.

‘Just Try It’ Toddler Meals

Short Cut Fried Rice

Combine fully cooked rice with a scrambled egg. Stir in a ¼ cup of peas and ¼ cup of rice. Drizzle with reduced-sodium soy sauce (maybe a teaspoon). Add fruit on the side like cut-up cherries or melons, and you’ll have a complete meal.

Veggie Grilled Cheese

Use whole grain bread and your favorite cheese. Add a layer of mashed sweet potatoes and cook as usual. Serve with a side of steamed broccoli for a complete meal.

Easy Spinach Pancakes

Blend an egg, ¼ -½ cup of fresh spinach, and half a banana in a blender and pour into small pancakes. These pancakes are surprisingly moist and sweet. Plus, green food is fun. Serve with fruit and a serving of dairy, and you’ll have a complete meal.

Enjoy The Meal

Family time around the table is one of the most formative experiences of a child’s life. Remember to keep it fun and light around meal time. Put down the cell phones and let everyone relax. It’s important to slow down and enjoy the food together. Don’t forget to eat something healthy yourself!
